The information presented here is a summary of the basic rules determining who is entitled to be attributed to the Portuguese Nationality Law 37/81.
Citizens born in the former Portuguese territories of Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra, Nagar Haveli are Portuguese citizens, including their descendants (children, grandchildren, etc.) who can apply for Portuguese citizenship.
Anyone can apply for registration of the Portuguese citizenship on the basis of their birth, during the period of Portuguese sovereignty, even after his/her death (their descendants up to their third generation).
If still alive, the applicant may submit the application in person. Otherwise, their descendants are entitled to submit the application on their behalf.
It will always depend on your generation. Every birth will have the emolument cost of 175€ and every marriage will have the emolument cost of 120€.
After submission, the applications will be analyzed by the competent sector of the Portuguese Government. You may be requested to add more documents to the process or explain one or another detail. After the citizenship is issued, a Portuguese Birth Certificate will be issued. This document will be enough to get a Passport and a citizen card in any Portuguese Embassy/Consulate.
NOTE: There is a huge number of pending cases before the Portuguese Government that is simply stopped, due to both poor communication with the authorities and also lack of knowledge about the Portuguese Law. These applications can be tracked and we can assist you in any pending case.
